Introduction to Chemistry

Definition:-

“The branch of science which deals with the study of composition, physical and chemical properties is called Chemistry.”

Importance of Chemistry:-

The importance of chemistry lies in the fact that we see different natural phenomena taking place in our environment. The process of rusting of iron, the formation of water, the formation of coal and all other things are studied under chemistry.

Branches of Chemistry:-

There are various branches of chemistry. Some of them are given below:-

1) Physical Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of physical properties of substances is called Physical Chemistry.”

These properties include the structure of an atom, behavior of all the physical states of matter.

2) Organic Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of the compounds of carbon and hydrogen and their derivate is called Organic Chemistry.”

Organic compounds are very important in our lives as approximately all of our food consists of organic compounds.

3) Inorganic chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of all the elements, compounds except that of composed of carbon and hydrogen and their compounds is called Inorganic Chemistry.”

It has application in every aspect of our lives like in the making of glass, cement, glazes etc.

4) Biochemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of all the chemical reactions taking place in all the living organisms is called Biochemistry.”

Applications of biochemistry are in the fields of medicine, food science and agriculture.

5) Industrial Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of all the chemical reactions and the production of products on commercial scale is called Industrial Chemistry.”

This branch of chemistry deals with the production of the raw materials and daily-useable products like detergents, soap, fertilizers etc.

6) Nuclear Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of radioactivity, nuclear processes and properties is called Nuclear Chemistry.”

In this branch of chemistry, we get to know about the making of nuclear bombs, working of medical treatment devices, like X-Ray machines.

7) Environmental Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of all the components of environment and their adverse effects on our environment is called Environmental Chemistry.”

In this branch of chemistry, we study about the pollutants in our environment, whether it is primary or secondary.

8) Analytical Chemistry:-

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of separation and analysis of a sample to identify its components is called Analytical Chemistry.”

This sample is identified by quantitative and qualitative analysis. Qualitative analysis provides the identity of a substance. Quantitative analysis tells us about the amount of each component.
